How a Fortune 100 insurer stood up its first AI engineering team in eight weeks

A custom training program took hand-picked engineers from mixed technical backgrounds to a working internal AI team.

How a Fortune 100 insurer stood up its first AI engineering team in eight weeks

A Fortune 100 national insurance corporation, with lines spanning auto, home, renters, condo, motorcycle, and life, wanted virtual assistants and chatbots on its national website, built with Python, Amazon Lex, and cloud computing. It had the engineers. What it needed was a way to turn them into an AI team.

The challenge

The hand-picked group came from different technical backgrounds, with no foundational AI and machine learning program to bring them to a common baseline. The L&D team wanted a partner with real delivery experience to shape the outline, the timeline, and the training itself.

How we helped

We assessed the goals for the team and designed a custom program across AWS, Node, Angular, Python fundamentals, data analytics, virtual assistants, and machine learning. Six specialist technologists each taught their own area across a three-week program that ended in a two-day hands-on hackathon run by our lead machine learning expert, with individual evaluations shared with the client. Inception to delivery took eight weeks.

The result

The insurer stood up its first internal AI implementation engineering team and kept a repeatable program for growing it. More than 12 chatbots now run on its national website, customer engagement with them is up 26 percent, and the team continues to expand in size and skills.
